DESCRIPTION:Admission: $20 at the Door| Children (under 12) free \nMission Hill Brass Presents: Annual Fall Concert – With Nathan Samuelson \nIf you ever have the opportunity to see Nathan Samuelson perform\, prepare to be taken on a musical odyssey. His music is imbued with wanderlust —inspired by years at sea and a careful balancing act between new horizons and the love of home. Audiences are sonically teleported to the tropical shores of Brazil\, the cosmopolitan streets of New York\, and the old world sophistication of Europe. Despite the many nautical miles he’s logged\, his music maintains the wholesome honesty of his prairie boyhood. That sweet earnestness and approachability is what turns audiences of strangers into loyal fans. \nThe youngest son of an esteemed trumpet player and band teacher father\, as well as a gentle and beloved flautist/pianist mother\, Nathan seemed predestined to play since birth. His passion for trumpet became evident as a small boy\, when upon listening to “Feel So Good” by Chuck Mangione he proclaimed that no matter the obstacle he would become a world class trumpet player. On his musical pilgrimage\, he has studied under master teachers such as Dominic Spera [Indiana University]\, Terell Stafford [Temple University -Philadelphia] and Brad Goode [University of Boulder]. Nathan also received his jazz trumpet performance diploma at Grant MacEwan University. A devotee of Clifford Brown\, he attends the Clifford Brown Trumpet Consortium each summer\, receiving a full scholarship in 2018. \nAside from private study and educational accomplishments\, Nathan has developed a strong career as a cruise ship musician\, known for both his technical prowess\, versatility\, and utmost professionalism. He has graced stages in exotic locales such as Brazil\, Croatia\, Italy\, Greece\, France\, Portugal\, England\, Spain and more. To add\, he shared these stages with world class artists like late soul icon Clem Curtis [The Foundations] of “Build Me Up\, Buttercup” fame. He has also performed with Leanne Mitchell\, winner of the first series of The Voice UK. In his home community of Edmonton\, Alberta he is often found volunteering his talent for children and youth\, as well as people experiencing disability. When not volunteering\, he can be found performing as a guest artist with jazz ensembles\, or leading his own quintet. \nAfter nearly twenty-two years of honing his craft and cultivating his passion\, Nathan Samuelson launched his debut album City Lights Ahead [August 2018]. Inspired by his journey as a young man searching for love\, for meaning\, and for himself across the globe\, City Lights Ahead is a brilliantly crafted\, genre-bending love letter to the open sea\, the close-knit family that uplifts him\, and the starry embrace of the shore after a dark\, stormy night

DESCRIPTION:Admission: $20 at the Door| Children (under 12) free \nMission Hill Brass Presents: Hope Springs a Concert – With Emily Ewing \n  \nMission Hill Brass is pleased to announce the final concert of its 14th season. \nThe concert entitled Hope Springs a Concert will be Sunday\, April 14\, 2019 at 3:00 pm\, at the St. Albert United Church. Tickets are $20 at the door and children under 12 have free admission. \nSt. Albert’s own 30-piece British-style brass band is pleased to welcome its first ever female instrumental soloist in cornetist Emily Ewing of the Canadian Staff Band (Toronto\, ON) of the Salvation Army\, Canada’s premier brass band. \nEmily is a second-generation member of the Canadian Staff Band (CSB) and is the third member of her family to play in the band. Her father was a percussionist for 26 years in the band and her oldest sister\, Sarah\, played Cornet and Flugelhorn in the band. \nEmily will be playing two solo’s one of which “True Salvation” was written specifically for her by her brother in law\, Ruben Schmidt of Solingen Germany. This concert will be the premier performance of this solo. Emily will also be playing “Knowing You” by Canadian composer and arranger Craig Woodlands of London\, Ontario. Emily played this solo with the Canadian Staff Band at the North American Staff Bands of the Salvation Army concert in Long Beach\, California in 2017 and is also on the CSB “Undaunted” CD. \nAlso\, on the program will be the cornet duet “Quicksilver” which will feature Emily and Mission Hill Brass Music Director\, Daniel Skepple. \nMusical selections for the band will include Clog Dance from the 1996 movie Brassed Off\, Lux Aurumque a Choral number arranged for brass band by Canadian trombonist Andrew Poirier. This concert will also feature the trombone section of Mission Hill in the worship song Shine on Us composed by Michael W. Smith and arranged by retired Lt (N) Peter van der Horden of Halifax\, NS. A special treat for this concert will be Richard Wagner’s “Else’s Procession to the Cathedral.” \nThe March from the movie the Great Escape along with the humorous Hornpipe Humoroso will be featured in the second half and the band will finish the concert with the very dynamic Gaelforce by Peter Graham. \nDoors open at 2:30pm on Sunday\, April 14\, 2019. Tickets will be available at the door.
